What Is FSC Chain of Custody Certification?

If you supply, process or sell timber, paper or wood-based products, you’ve probably come across the term “FSC Chain of Custody” — but it’s not always clear what it actually means in practice.

What it is

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Chain of Custody certification tracks certified material through every stage it passes through — from the certified forest, through processing, manufacturing and distribution, to the finished product on a shelf. It’s the paper trail (and often the physical segregation) that lets a business make a credible FSC claim on its products.

Without Chain of Custody certification at every link in the supply chain, a company can’t legitimately put the FSC logo on its products or invoices — even if the raw material genuinely came from a certified forest.

Who needs it

Any organisation that takes ownership of FSC-certified material and wants to pass on an FSC claim — sawmills, manufacturers, printers, merchants, retailers — needs its own certificate. It’s not inherited automatically from a supplier or a customer.

How the process works, broadly

1. Gap analysis — understanding your current systems against the FSC Chain of Custody standard (FSC-STD-40-004).
2. System design — building procedures for purchasing, receiving, production, and sales that keep certified and non-certified material properly identified and separated (or accounted for under a percentage/credit system).
3. Staff training — the people handling goods and paperwork day to day need to understand the system, not just have a manual on a shelf.
4. Certification audit — carried out by an accredited certification body (we’ve worked alongside SGS, NQA, Interface NRM and Preferred by Nature), followed by annual surveillance audits.

A common mistake

The biggest failure point we see isn’t the initial system design — it’s day-to-day discipline. A Chain of Custody system that only gets followed in the run-up to an audit isn’t really a system; it’s paperwork. The organisations that get the most value build something their team can run without thinking about it.
